The Windows to the Soul

Monday, March 15th, 2010

Recently, as I was perusing the plethora of photography blogs I follow (seriously, it’s border line ridiculous how many photographer’s blogs I follow!), I noticed something in common with a majority of the photos. I know what you are thinking and let me stop you before you even go there… no, I’m not talking about a particular technique or composition but instead the fact these exceptionally talented photographers are well trained at capturing the essence, or soul, of a person.

Capturing emotion in a photograph is not an easy feat. With the rise in technological advances, anybody (and I do mean anybody), can buy a nicely priced DSLR, switch it into automatic mode and take some pretty nice pictures; it is really that easy. However, it is the ability to use technique, vision, and composition in conjunction that produces great photos; the kinds of photos that can make you cry, or laugh, or swoon, or whatever other emotion the photographer, the artist is trying to elicit. This is the art of photography.

It is my hope that with more practice and a little time that I too will become a master of photographing emotion. They say the eyes are the windows to the soul… well, here are two photos I feel capture the essence of my little models. Their eyes are expressive (in very different ways) and it is my hope that these pictures evoke some sort of emotion.

The Color is Red

Monday, March 15th, 2010

I absolutely adore the color red! My eyes are automatically drawn to it wherever I go. I have tons of red clothes, so many, that my boyfriend suggested that I start buying different color clothes because my wardrobe was becoming an endless sea of red. So as I was photographing my lovely red shoes, I wondered what the color red means and what liking the color says about me as a person. After a little google search, this is what I came up with:

Red is the color of fire and blood, so it is associated with energy, war, danger, strength, power, determination as well as passion, desire, and love.

Red is a very emotionally intense color. It enhances human metabolism, increases respiration rate, and raises blood pressure. It has very high visibility, which is why stop signs, stoplights, and fire equipment are usually painted red. In heraldry, red is used to indicate courage. It is a color found in many national flags.

Red brings text and images to the foreground. Use it as an accent color to stimulate people to make quick decisions; it is a perfect color for ‘Buy Now’ or ‘Click Here’ buttons on Internet banners and websites. In advertising, red is often used to evoke erotic feelings (red lips, red nails, red-light districts, ‘Lady in Red’, etc). Red is widely used to indicate danger (high voltage signs, traffic lights). This color is also commonly associated with energy, so you can use it when promoting energy drinks, games, cars, items related to sports and high physical activity.

Light red represents joy, sexuality, passion, sensitivity, and love.
Pink signifies romance, love, and friendship. It denotes feminine qualities and passiveness.
Dark red is associated with vigor, willpower, rage, anger, leadership, courage, longing, malice, and wrath.
Brown suggests stability and denotes masculine qualities.
Reddish-brown is associated with harvest and fall.

From that description it is evident that red has a dual identity. A good side and a dark side. Red can invoke emotions like danger and anger however, conversely, it can bring up feelings of love, passion, and determination. I care to look at the positive side of my favorite color because it is those attributes that I feel describe me perfectly. So here’s to the color red! You are still a favorite in my book and since things are much better with a picture… here are my lovely red shoes!

The Master’s Lock

Monday, March 15th, 2010

It was a cloudy day, the sun could not be seen anywhere in the sky. It was on this day when she searched aimlessly for the answers to questions that lingered in the crevices of her mind. “How do I find the keys to open these locks?”she asked as the last bit of her confidence slithered away. She reached out for it, frantically, grasping only at air. She bowed her head, ready to accept defeat and the realization that maybe she wasn’t meant for this journey. As her hands fell to her side, she caught the warmth of the sun across her face. She looked up to see rays of sun cascading over her. She followed the rays’ path meticulously and that’s when she saw it… the lock. The Master had given her a sign, He had opened the lock; the one for which she could not find the key. Indeed, the lock was not hers to open. It is then that she realized it was the Master’s lock to open, at the right time, in the right season…

We all come across so many “locks” in our lives. It can often times become discouraging to be in the same position time and time again, where we are constantly bombarded by road blocks. However, with a little faith and a lot of patience, we can all see our dreams, wishes, and desires come to fruition. It seems that every time I am feeling discourage, He gives me a reason and a sign not to be. I guess it’s true what they say, “everything happens in its own time…”

Since this is first and foremost a photo blog, I had to leave you guys with some pictures. These photos serve as a constant reminder that not all locks are meant for me to open but instead rest in the hands of my Master.
