Atlanta Children Portraiture Photography | Dakotah

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

Yesterday, I spent the entire day with Connie (who is also a photographer) learning some new photography skills and getting advice on my business. Most importantly, I was able to learn some things about studio lighting. Before yesterday, I had never used a strobe in my life because I am primarily a natural light photographer. So, when Connie invited me over to learn a few things about studio lighting I jumped at the opportunity. I was able to play around with the lights in her studio and ask as many questions as I wanted. She also let me take pictures of her adorable daughter who definitely knows how to pose in front of the camera. Using strobes and taking pictures in a studio is very different for me, but I enjoyed pushing myself out of my comfort zone. By doing so, I was able to get some really stellar images. I have more to learn about this form of lighting before I will feel comfortable calling myself an expert but here’s to a good start. Who knows, maybe I’ll make my own in home studio!

Thanks again for opening your home to me Connie! I really appreciate it and tell Dakotah that she rocks!

Children Make Me Smile by Saadia Me*Chel | Atlanta Portrait Photography

Sunday, April 4th, 2010

Ohayou gozaimasu!

What  is it that makes you smile? For me, one of the things, is children. I’m surrounded by them throughout the day and they make wonderful, albeit sometimes challenging, models. However, their smiling faces and carefree demeanor is infectious! They make me smile in utter bliss! I would be hard pressed to be sad surrounded by the children I see everyday. During a afternoon of play, he stopped and smiled for me! Glad I had my camera ready!!! Every time I look at this picture… I smile :-)

Happy Easter! make sure you smile sometime today!

Life is simple we make it more complicated than it has to be… maybe it’s time we become more like children in this regard.

The Windows to the Soul

Monday, March 15th, 2010

Recently, as I was perusing the plethora of photography blogs I follow (seriously, it’s border line ridiculous how many photographer’s blogs I follow!), I noticed something in common with a majority of the photos. I know what you are thinking and let me stop you before you even go there… no, I’m not talking about a particular technique or composition but instead the fact these exceptionally talented photographers are well trained at capturing the essence, or soul, of a person.

Capturing emotion in a photograph is not an easy feat. With the rise in technological advances, anybody (and I do mean anybody), can buy a nicely priced DSLR, switch it into automatic mode and take some pretty nice pictures; it is really that easy. However, it is the ability to use technique, vision, and composition in conjunction that produces great photos; the kinds of photos that can make you cry, or laugh, or swoon, or whatever other emotion the photographer, the artist is trying to elicit. This is the art of photography.

It is my hope that with more practice and a little time that I too will become a master of photographing emotion. They say the eyes are the windows to the soul… well, here are two photos I feel capture the essence of my little models. Their eyes are expressive (in very different ways) and it is my hope that these pictures evoke some sort of emotion.
